A few of our customers in Minneapolis have asked a similar question – Who owns Jaguar?

Tata Motors acquired Jaguar in 2008. Headquartered in India, they are an automotive behemoth with a global presence, but the majority of new Jaguar vehicles and their corresponding parts are produced in Britain. Tata Motors is one of the biggest car manufacturers on the planet and its parent company, the Tata Group, is an international conglomerate with interests in steel, telecom, hospitality, and other ventures. A Look Into the History of the Jaguar Brand

The brand Jaguar was initially created as a small automotive company in the early 1900s. In 1922, the Swallow Sidecar company was a lean, ambitious startup founded in England by two friends, William Lyons and William Walmsley. Walmsley started his career by manufacturing sidecars and attaching them to motorcycles. Lyons saw that the product was selling and realized the profitable potential of the sidecars. The two then went into business together.

  1. In 1945, the S.S. Cars were renamed Jaguar Cars Limited to distinguish themselves as a memorable brand.
  2. Jaguar became known for creating jaw-dropping sports cars like the Jaguar XK120 and Jaguar E-TYPE and for international motorsports, winning the 1951 and 1953 Le Mans 24-Hour Race.
  3. In 1965, Jaguar Cars became part of British Motor Holdings Limited, which later merged with the Rover manufacturer Leyland Motor Corporation Limited to create  the British Leyland Motor Corporation.
  4. In 1975, The British Leyland Motor Corporation became nationalized due to financial difficulties.
  5. In 1984, Jaguar became its own company again.
  6. Ford Motors purchased Jaguar in 1999 and purchased Land Rover in 2000, selling both to Tata Motors in 2008.
