Hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars both combine a gasoline engine with a battery-powered electric motor. The difference is that with hybrid cars, the gas engine charges the electric motor as you drive. Because of this, hybrids don’t need to be plugged into a charging port and run on electric power if they run low on gasoline fuel.
Plug-in hybrids use a larger electric motor and run on electric power primarily. When your plug-in hybrid runs low on electric power, it switches to gas power.
